There are a few reasons why you as a property owner may not have flood insurance. You may not realize that flood damage is not included in your homeowners or property insurance…or you may think that you do not live in an area that could get damaged by flood waters.
In 2015, in Columbia, SC they received what the news said was about 6 months of rainwater in just 2 days. Columbia is not on the coast, it does not often see a lot of rain, so you would think that you would not need flood insurance. This shows that just because flooding may not occur often in your area does not mean that it cannot happen.
This particular event was caused by Flash Flooding. This type of flood can occur with little or no warning and can happen anywhere. The Weather Channel describes a flash flood as “quick-rising floods usually occurring as the result of heavy rains over a short period of time, often only several hours or even less. They can also be caused by ice jams on rivers in conjunction with a winter or spring thaw, or occasionally even a dam break. The constant influx of water finally causes a treacherous overflow to begin, powerful enough to sweep vehicles away, roll boulders into roadways, uproot trees, level buildings, and drag bridges off their piers. Most frightening is the rapidity with which the water rises.”

According to the Red Cross fires cause over $7 billion in property damage each year & around 7 people die each day from home fires. Just last week in London a high rise apartment building caught on fire with over 600 residents inside. There were over 79 fatalities. According to a report from CBS News, the building had a history of numerous complaints about fire safety regulations throughout the past 3 years. The fire took only six minutes to spread six floors up. The external cladding that was installed in 2016 is believed to be the cause of the rapid spread of the fire. British & Australian officials has since started removing similar type cladding from other buildings.

Tis’ the season for inflatable vandalism…or so it seems. Yesterday alone there were at least five news articles from across the country of inflatable Christmas displays that were vandalized or stolen. Whether you rent Christmas themed bounce houses, or have Christmas inflatables outside your business/home this is something you definitely need to be on the lookout for.
According to New Jersey news sources, a father has just filed a lawsuit against the owners of an indoor bounce house center. Earlier this year, while 3-year old Daniel was celebrating his birthday, he fell out of a bounce house. The fall caused the child to break his leg. According to the families attorney, Daniel now walks with a limp.
The lawsuit claims that the Indoor Center is at fault due to: “improper supervision, lack of proper control, overcrowding & failure to properly maintain a bounce house.”. The lawsuit is seeking compensatory damages for “the loss of services of his son, including guidance, companionship, assistance, household services and society”. Many sports pose the risk of eye injuries; some have a higher risk than others. According to “The National Eye Institute”, baseball is considered a high risk for eye injury and has the leading number of sports-related eye injuries. Although sports such as baseball & basketball have the highest risk, a recent study has found that Paintball actually poses the greatest risk of vision loss associated with the injury.
The reason that Paintball/Airsoft has the highest risk of vision loss is because, while large balls such as baseballs may fracture bones, smaller balls (like a paintballs) can injure or rupture the eyeball itself. So what can be done to lower the amount vision loss injuries in Paintball? Eye Protection…our insurance program requires full face & ear protection for Paintball and Airsoft. So why full face & ear when we are talking about eye injuries hear? Ear injuries are actually said to be the next common type of Paintball injury after eyes. Ear injuries can result in hearing loss, concussion or even a ruptured ear drum. This is true for Airsoft as well, ever had a BB in the ear? Not pleasant. Bottom line is, injuries from any sport can be potentially serious. Be sure to use the recommended safety equipment every time.

The Southern East Coast is bracing for Hurricane Matthew, which is predicted to be the strongest hurricane to hit the US Coast line in over a decade. The Governor of South Carolina declared for a state of emergency & possible evacuations as Matthew inches closer. Do you know what to do in the event of a strong hurricane hitting where you live or do business?
The National Weather Service has many resources to help you prepare for a hurricane. The first thing the NWS suggests is to know if your area has an evacuation center & know where it is before the storm hits. You should also have a list of everything you will need if you need to evacuate. This is not the time to take all your belongings with you, you must plan to take only the essentials. Including clean clothes, cash, credit cards, bottled water, and a basic first aid supply kit.
Keep an eye on weather forecasts, hurricanes can be very unpredictable. Also make sure that your homeowners & business insurance provides for hurricane & flood damage…this is not something you want to find out after the fact.
